Hilton Head Island is gearing up for one of its most highly anticipated autumn events of the year — the Hilton Head Oyster Festival. An Island tradition for over 30 years and is beloved by both locals and tourists alike. Taking place on November 7th and 8th, 2025, this festival is more than just an opportunity to indulge in some of the freshest oysters you’ll ever taste; it’s a celebration of local culture & community spirit that makes Hilton Head a must-visit destination.
November is an ideal time to visit Hilton Head Island. The weather is pleasantly mild, and the summer crowds have dwindled, making for a more relaxed vibe on the island. Combine this with the Oyster Festival’s festivities, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a memorable weekend retreat.
The festival will feature live music performances from local bands and artists, creating an energetic atmosphere that complements the lively vibe of the event. From jazz and blues to folk and rock, there’s something to get everyone tapping their toes and dancing along. Whether you’re a local or a guest here on the island, here’s why you should mark your calendar and join the festivities.
For seafood enthusiasts, the Hilton Head Oyster Festival is nothing short of paradise. With over 10,000 oysters expected to be served, the festival offers a smorgasbord of oyster varieties, from the briny and bold to the sweet and succulent. Local oyster farmers and seafood vendors will be on hand to showcase their best offerings, and chat about why there are so many distinctions and differing flavor complexes. This is an all-you-can-eat event.
Saturday, November 9th | 11am-5pm
Enjoy buckets of oysters and tons of live music on Saturday! But it’s not just about the oysters, the festival features an array of seafood dishes. Think oyster po’boys, fried oysters, oyster stew, buckets of steamed shrimp, and more. If you’re not an oyster aficionado, fear not—there are plenty of other options to keep everyone in your group satisfied. For families, the festival offers a variety of activities designed to keep kids entertained. There will be games, face painting, and even a dedicated kid’s zone where young festival-goers can enjoy a range of fun activities. The festival’s family-friendly environment makes it a great outing for parents and kids alike.
One of the highlights of the Hilton Head Oyster Festival is the chance to explore an array of local artisans and vendors. From handcrafted jewelry and artwork to unique souvenirs and gourmet food products, the festival provides a platform for local businesses to pull out all the stops. It’s a unique opportunity to support the community and find one-of-a-kind items that reflect the spirit of Hilton Head.
At its heart, the Hilton Head Oyster Festival is a celebration of community. Hilton Head Island is a destination known for its stunning beaches, diverse ecosystems, and unique habitats abounding in wildlife. Whether it’s witnessing the marvel of baby sea turtle hatchlings, getting up close and personal with our beloved marine mammals, encountering alligators, or discovering Hilton Head’s best birding spots with your binocs, you’ll soon discover a deep appreciation for our island’s natural wonders.
Witnessing wildlife in its natural habitat is a magical and memorable experience but it’s vital to engage in responsible wildlife watching to maintain a healthy balance between humans and the island’s delicate wildlife habitats. For the safety of our local wildlife (and yours!), here are 7 tips for responsible wildlife watching on Hilton Head Island.
1. Drive Slow
When exploring Hilton Head Island by car, it’s important to drive at a slow and cautious pace, follow the speed limits, and keep a careful watch for wildlife on the roads. During dawn and dusk, wildlife are far more active on the roads and tend to travel in groups, if you see one crossing the street, the chances are more will follow.
2. Leash Up Your Furry Friends
The locals on Hilton Head Island love our pets as much as we love our wildlife, but please respect the rules in place to protect and preserve our wildlife habitats. To ensure the safety of our local wildlife and your furry friends, please keep pets on a leash at all times, do not allow them to swim or roam near alligator habitats, keep a mindful eye around sea turtle nesting grounds, and never leave them unattended. At night, keep your pet indoors for safety and bring pet food and water dishes inside to deter nighttime visitors.
3. Observe Wildlife from a Safe Distance
Be sure to add binoculars and a camera to your Hilton Head packing list! As exciting and tempting as it may seem to get up close and personal with wildlife, our local wildlife should never be approached. Respect their space, avoid close interactions, do not provoke, and always observe wildlife quietly from a safe and respectful distance – this is critical for their wellbeing, and yours!
Marine Life Encounters: On the waterways surrounding Hilton Head, marine life encounters are a given. Be mindful and maintain a safe distance when boating and paddling the waterways to avoid collisions or injuries, allow them to swim freely and undisturbed, and stay at least 140 feet away from dolphins at all times. The Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin is protected under federal law by the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 and by the Endangered Species Act of 1973, it is illegal to harass, hunt, capture, or kill any marine mammal.
Alligator Encounters: Hilton Head is home to a healthy population of American Alligators, one of the Lowcountry’s most iconic native species. Always assume every body of water may contain an alligator, swimming or wading in ponds and lagoons is prohibited, fish only from the docks and piers, and keep a close eye on kids and pets near any water on Hilton Head. If you’re planning to book at tee time on Hilton Head’s iconic golf courses, you may even encounter alligators strolling between lagoons. Local rules and regulations require you to stay at least 60 feet (4 cars in length) away from alligators.
Sea Turtle Encounters: Hilton Head Island is a nesting ground for several species of sea turtles, including greens, leatherbacks, and the endangered loggerhead sea turtle. During the sea turtle season (May to October), our ancient residents and their hatchlings are strictly protected by local and federal regulations with severe penalties for handling or interfering with sea turtles, nesting sites, and baby hatchlings.
4. Don’t Feed Wildlife
While it may seem harmless, please resist the urge to feed our local wildlife. Feeding wildlife makes them associate humans with food, can disrupt their natural behaviors and diets, and can turn the animal aggressive leading to potentially dangerous situations. Visitors to Hilton Head are often tempted to feed our friendly local dolphin pods without realizing that under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, feeding or harassing dolphins is illegal, resulting in fines that can reach up to $100,000.
5. Always Follow the Signs
Always be on the lookout for posted signs and guidelines to avoid disturbing the natural habitats on Hilton Head Island. Whether it’s a marked-off sea turtle nesting area on the beach, an alligator alert on the fairways, or interpretive signage along the 60+ miles of Hilton Head Island pathways, these rules are in place to protect our fragile ecosystems, free-roaming wildlife, and curious visitors tempted to get too close and personal with our local wildlife.
6. Lights out!
Artificial lighting disorientates sea turtles and their hatchlings from the natural light of the moon. If you’re staying in an oceanfront rental, from 1 May to 31 October all light fixtures visible from the beach are required to be switched off between 10 PM and 6 AM. This includes interior blinds and drapes, all outdoor lighting, and any flashlight photography. Always report any sea turtle sightings or stranded sea turtles to the SC Department of Natural Resources Hotline at (800) 922-5431.
7. Leave Only Footprints
Our presence in nature should never leave a lasting impression! To minimize the impact on our diverse barrier island ecosystems and maintain the island’s pristine environment, please leave no trace, only footprints! Dispose of all trash properly to prevent harm to wildlife, always leave the beach clean, remove sandcastles and fill in holes for traveling sea turtles, and do not leave any umbrellas, chairs, or accessories on the beach overnight. Book a stay with a participating Sunset Rentals property to quality for complimentary bike & beach gear from Vayk Gear. Learn how it works HERE!

Daufuskie Island is the southernmost inhabited sea island in South Carolina, located just 11 miles from Hilton Head Island. Daufuskie is only accessible by boat, so make your way over to the Daufuskie Island Ferry at Buckingham Landing to start your adventure!
The Harbour Town Lighthouse is an infamous landmark that has come to symbolize Hilton Head Island over the past five decades. Many people travel over to Harbour Town to take their annual family vacation photos with the bright red and white stripes behind them and capture stunning sunset views of the Lighthouse over the harbor, but few venture into the Lighthouse.
The Harbour Town Lighthouse Museum offers the opportunity to climb all the way to the top of the lighthouse and see Hilton Head from a whole new viewpoint. As you make your way up the long winding stairs, you’ll be able to explore the Island’s rich history and get the inside scoop on how the Lighthouse was built! Don’t miss the opportunity to see Hilton Head Island from above at one of the Island’s most famous landmarks.
3. Gullah Heritage Trail
The Gullah Heritage Trail is a historical landmark, celebrating the authentic culture of the sea islands. Gullah is a system of traditions, customs, beliefs, art forms and West African family life that have survived slavery and are now celebrated in the free lifestyle.
As a whole, this trail area is known as the Gullah Geechee Corridor. The brilliant tour guides on Hilton Head Island were born and raised here before the bridge connection to the mainland. 5. Honey Horn
Coastal Discovery Museum offers a multitude of exhibits, events, tours, and experiences, but in our opinion– Honey Horn is their best kept secret! Honey Horn is a popular destination amongst locals for photoshoots and memorable events for good reason.
You can stop to smell the Camellias, explore the century-old buildings, learn about the grounds’ historied past, cross boardwalks to Jarvis Creek marsh, and observe Marsh Tacky horses grazing through the open pasture. Discover Honey Horn at your own pace!
6. Fish Haul Beach
Fish Haul Beach Park is one of Hilton Head’s many hidden gems, offering a less popular beachfront perfect for those looking to explore and enjoy their quiet getaway. This beach access is tucked away in Bay Gall, one of the historic Gullah neighborhoods.
This beach overlooks Port Royal Sound, offering visitors the perfect space for leisurely walking, active bird watching and relaxing in the sand with beautiful beach views away from the hustle and bustle.
7. The Farmers & Makers Market
The Farmers and Makers Market is located in the Shops at Sea Pines Center, offering visitors a chance to take home a little piece of the island! 9. Skull Creek Marina
Skull Creek Marina is home to several amenities in the midst of the island’s top activities and attractions. As sailors and anglers reel into the harbor, you can sit back and watch the sunset across the water, pick up a fishing rod and catch a few, board a charter, and more!
Skull Creek is well known for its hospitality and docks, but few know that it is one of the best spots on the island to catch a beautiful sunset, fish over the sparkling water, and explore amenities.

Hilton Head Island is also a verydog-friendly destination! Yes, Fido can visit the island’s top tourist attractions, restaurants, and beaches too!
Planning a successful family vacation is tricky enough, trying to coordinate a destination family reunion that puts a smile on everyone’s dial, from the tiniest tots to the great-grandparents, can be downright intimidating!
Our local team at Sunset Rentals has been welcoming family groups of all sizes to the island since 1993, and we know a thing or two about hosting a family reunion on Hilton Head Island. We’ve put together our top 5 tips for hosting a family reunion on Hilton Head Island, and have a treasure trove of local tips and recommendations in our Hilton Head Island travel blog to help plan a successful reunion.
1. Select Your Season
The weather on Hilton Head Island is beautiful year-round and we have some of the warmest ocean water on the Atlantic Coast! The official beach season (and peak season on Hilton Head) is April 1st through September 30th and May through October is prime sea turtle season, an easy way to entice the family to a reunion on Hilton Head Island. The summer season tends to be hot and humid with temps between 86oF and 92oF and the winters are mild, rarely dipping below 60oF.
How you select the season for your reunion depends on your family style and preference – hot, summer beach days, cooler weather and fewer crowds out of season, or a winter snowbird family reunion at the beach! Be aware that many of the island’s outdoor outfitters close for a period during the winter season, so do your activity research in advance.
2. Decide Where to Stay on Hilton Head
Hilton Head Island is divided into unique gated communities, known as resort areas of plantations, with an Infinite choice of accommodation available in each resort area community. Palmetto Dunes and Sea Pines Resort are particularly popular with families, Shipyard and Port Royal are quieter neighborhoods, and Forest Beach lies in the heart of the action, within walking distance to Hilton Head’s downtown area activities, Coligny Plaza shops and restaurants, and the shoreline of the award-winning Coligny Beach Park. Wherever you decide to stay on Hilton Head, the island’s beautiful beaches are within easy reach on the network of trails connecting every resort area.
3. Arrange Your Island Activities In Advance
Planning activities for a big group can be challenging, but Hilton Head Island’s extensive activity offerings appeal to young and old alike! Balance your days between beach play, water activities, golf and racquet sports, cultural experiences, and eco-friendly nature tours unique to South Carolina’s Lowcountry barrier islands. Hilton Head is a popular destination, be sure to plan and book your tours and activities well in advance to avoid disappointment!
Hilton Head Island has over 60 miles of leisure paths winding through the island for fun family bike rides, gentle strolls for the older folk, and some of the best wildlife viewing on the island!
The island boasts 12 miles of Atlantic shoreline with easy access to long wide stretches of white sand beaches, beautiful boardwalks through tidal marshes and sand dunes, seasonal lifeguards, excellent amenities, beach gear rentals, and everything the family needs for a day at the beach! For indoor entertainment, the kids love exploring the Children’s Sandbox Museum, Adventure Cove, and the Kids Zone at the Coastal Discovery Museum. And, Hilton Head Island has endless retail therapy and restaurants to lure you away from the beach.
From foodie festivals, cultural celebrations, and fabulous summer events at Shelter Cove and under the famous Liberty Oak at Harbour Town, there is always something happening on Hilton Head Island! So, if you’re visiting Hilton Head Island in winter and want to hit the links, where should you go? The team at Sunset Rentals has some ideas. Here’s our list of the best courses to play in Hilton Head on your winter golf trip.
Atlantic Dunes is the oldest golf course in Hilton Head, but it remains one of the best. Of all of the courses in Hilton Head, only two have oceanfront holes, and Atlantic Dunes is one of them. Be prepared to lose a few balls in the water; many of the holes feature water hazards. Overall, Atlantic Dunes is a challenge for golfers of all skill levels, but it’s a gorgeous course well worth visiting.
“Iconic” is how three-time U.S. Open Champion Hale Irwin describes Harbour Town Golf Links, and it’s hard to disagree. You might recognize the red and white striped lighthouse that backdrops this course; it’s quite famous. Harbour Town Golf Links is a favorite among PGA Tour players, and it’s not hard to see why; it’s a beautiful-looking course that features a series of world-renowned par threes. Plus, this course is more fun and playable compared to other upper echelon golf courses.
George Fazio Golf Course is Hilton Head Island’s only par-70 public golf course, and it is a beauty. George Fazio Golf Course is considered by many to be the most challenging public course on the island, but it is still an exceptional experience for golfers of all skill levels. The course only has two par fives, while the majority of the course features long par fours. George Fazio Golf Course is an excellent option if you’re looking for a challenging course with immaculate greens.
If you want to play a round at a course on the oceanfront, look no further than Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront Golf Course. What makes this golf course one of the best courses on Hilton Head? The 10th hole is stunning; on elevated greens, golfers enjoy panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. There are also the ever-shifting winds to account for, which means golfers must approach each hole differently. Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront Golf Course is truly unique and is sure to be a memorable experience for all players.

Our team at Sunset Rentals has pieced together a five-stop seafood guide, featuring an opulent jazz club, a channel-side bar, a sleek dining room, and more!

4. The Black Marlin Bayside Grill Some regard The Black Marlin as “raffish,” but we truly appreciate its unique blend of simplistic sophistication, family-friendly atmosphere, and surprisingly world-class oceanic edibles. The menu features everything from a seafood-stuffed flounder smothered in a lobster cream sauce to beer-battered cod and tropical mahi-mahi. It’s not often that you find a down-to-earth eatery that serves such decadent saltwater delights.
5. Marleys Shrim & Burger Shack If you’re looking for some quick and delicious made-from-scratch seafood, Marleys is the joint for you. Marleys operates out of a “shack,” where hungry patrons can simply walk up, order, and munch on the fried goodness on the well-manicured grounds. Simple pleasures, such as the hush puppies and fried green beans, are to-die-for. And we dare you to find tastier fish tacos, po’ boys, and lobster rolls in the Lowcountry.

With unbeatable views and incredible food, it’s no wonder everyone loves The Crazy Crab. This establishment is a favorite for seafood, happy hour, and so much more!
While it won’t be easy to pry your family from Hilton Head Island’s sandy beaches and pristine golf courses, there’s nothing quite like an aquatic adventure in Calibogue Sound, a salty bottlenose dolphin haven. There are countless ways to explore the Sound, including a dolphin safari, sky-high parasailing voyage, and chartered fishing trip. However, there’s nothing quite as action-packed as hopping aboard a speedy jet ski rental in Hilton Head Island and blazing through Calibogue Sound. This oceanic waterway features plantations, islands, and, of course, a bevy of underwater critters.
Finding a Jet Ski Rental in Hilton Head Island
Locating a jet ski rental in Hilton Head Island isn’t overly challenging as there are a handful of outfitters within minutes of Sunset Rentals’ fleet of South Carolina beach condos. That being said, wave runners are only available via reservation. Thus, we highly recommend reserving your ride several weeks in advance, if possible. The Sunset Rentals team has strong relationships with several water sports companies, including the three listed below. In alphabetical order, here the three best jet ski rentals in Hilton Head Island.
Harbour Town’s H2O Sports is a natural place to start as this long-standing establishment offers everything from alligator tours to sailing charters and, yes, jet ski rentals in Hilton Head. After a brief instruction (this pre-arrival safety video also helps), families can instantly throttle into Calibogue Sound, unlike other land-locked outfitters. Thus, there’s no need to worry about no-wake zones. H2O Sports boasts an expansive fleet of brand new Yamahas, as new additions are added every season. This lovely stretch of the Sound is home to several families of dolphins and sea turtles, so keep your eyes peeled! H2O is also the only company in town to offer GoPro video packages—a priceless keepsake, especially if you stumble upon a friendly bottlenose.
One HHI is best known for its knowledgeable, welcoming guides, who lead trips through Broad Creek and into the aforementioned Calibogue Sound. Fifteen minutes is added to these semi-guided excursions to account for the short jaunt through Broad Creek’s no-wake zone, where, as you might imagine, many dolphins gleefully explore the aquatic terrain. Travelers often marvel that One’s jet ski rentals in Hilton Head go from zero to 30 mph in only two seconds! It’s also worth noting that jet skiing is a sublime way to avoid crowds, especially during these unique times.
Sea Monkeys Watersports There’s just something undeniably memorable about choosing a small, family-owned business, such as Sea Monkeys. Sea Monkeys’ team is a tad more personable than other outfits, as they wave “switching fees,” provide military discounts, and are happy to snap free photos. A certified instructor escorts each 75-minute adventure from Hilton Head Harbor to a designated area, where the three-seaters (a rarity) can blaze through the teal sea with nary a care in the world. Because Sea Monkeys offers three-seaters, Mom or Dad can ride with two kids at once!

There’s never an offseason for Hilton Head Island water sports, especially for those with a penchant for aquatic thrills. With mid-June rapidly approaching and businesses gradually reopening, this summer aims to be yet another glorious chapter for you and your family. To ensure that your long-awaited island escape is nothing short of flawless, we’ve compiled five of the most popular Hilton Head water sports. There’s never been a more suitable time to motor deep at sea in search of true tranquility and perhaps a mid-day adventure.
1. Boating
While it’s not uncommon for our guests to arrive with their yacht hitched to their vehicle, it’s worth noting that several local companies offer affordable full-day boat rentals. The good folks at Sea Monkeys Watersports, for instance, have a small fleet of speed boats, one of which is bound have your name on it. Rates start at just $250, and fishing equipment is available for rental—a nice added perk for those hoping to hook a unique creature from below, such as sheepshead, whiting, or cobia.
2. Fishing
Speaking of colorful aquatic creatures from the deep: Fishing remains one of the most beloved Hilton Head water sports. Whether you plan to toss a line into the Atlantic from a local pier or a world-class fishing charter, there’s no doubt that you’ll hook your dinner if you’re patient. Captain Hook (no, not Peter Pan’s arch-nemesis) and Integrity Charters both have stellar reputations for chasing down sizable species, including barracuda, marlins, and even sharks.
3. Kayaking
By now, you likely know that kayaking ranks among the most peaceful Hilton Head water sports. Kayaking is an ideal mid-day activity for families who cherish the tranquility that comes with the island’s various saltmarshes and hidden creeks. While most tours don’t trek into the ocean per se, you will obtain faraway views of the big blue. The island’s many marshes and creeks play host to friendly bottlenose dolphins—and rentals are made readily available at nearly every watercraft outfitter at very reasonable prices!
4. Paddleboarding
Paddleboarding, much like kayaking, requires a lot of core stretch. But balance is the name of the game. We typically recommend H2O Sports for those who aim to learn how to board. Otherwise, the previously mentioned Sea Monkeys provides $40 all-day rentals for experienced paddlers. Paddling in the Lowcountry is a must for those who cherish natural beauty, wildlife, and a healthy dose of serenity.
5. Parasailing
Island Head and Sky Pirate both provide some of the most exhilarating Atlantic adventures on a daily basis, most notably those sky-high parasailing expeditions. Unlike most Hilton Head Island water sports, parasailing takes place high above the sea. In fact, many “flights” drift 800 feet above the azure Atlantic. It’s an experience, unlike any other.
A Well-Deserved South Carolina Family Vacation
Hilton Head Island remains one of the most beloved South Carolina vacation spots, particularly for those who revere the sand, the sea, and the sophistication of a stylish island vacation rental. Sunset Rentals has its finger on the pulse on the ever-changing travel industry. We know precisely what a family, group, or couple wants and needs in a vacation rental. That’s why most homes and condos include a pristine private pool, chef’s kitchen, high-speed internet, sleek architecture, and close proximity to the bike path, beaches, and countless restaurants that boast the freshest seafood in the county. With over 250 unique properties, you’re bound to find one that suits your family’s size, style, and budget perfectly!
Unquestionably, the most difficult aspect of planning a well-deserved vacation is lining up necessary pet boarding for your favorite furry friend. It’s never easy saying “goodbye” to a pet (or pets), even if it’s just for a week. However, one of the fastest-growing trends in the hospitality industry is the rise of pet travel. Instead of constantly worrying about your four-legged buddy throughout your long-awaited beachy escape to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, why not bring him or her along for the adventure of a lifetime? Luckily for you and your family, Sunset Rentals boasts the region’s premier pet-friendly vacation homes. In fact, we have the largest collection of seaside, pet-friendly rentals on Hilton Head Island, one of the Carolinas’ most desirable oceanfront locales.

Aside from our world-famous championship golf courses, you can practically take your well-behaved pooch anywhere on Hilton Head, including many of the island’s top tourist attractions, restaurants, and beaches. Say goodbye to hard-to-find pet sitters, doggy day cares, and costly boarding fees and start planning a pet-centric vacation with your pooch on Hilton Head Island.
America’s Favorite Island is not only one of the most popular island destinations in the US, Hilton Head is also an oceanfront paradise for dog lovers and their furry-family members. Situated on the southern tip of the South Carolina coastline, Hilton Head Island boasts 12-miles of pristine pet-friendly beaches for beach-loving pups, water activities for adventurers, nature trails for wildlife viewing, outdoor patios with designer doggie menus, and beachfront rentals that’ll have your dog drooling for days!
A recent study shows that nearly half the American population added a pet to their family during Covid and searches for “pet-friendly”, “dog-friendly”, and “allows pets” went up over 300%. Traveling with a pet requires a little extra thought and it’s always smart to plan ahead when adding the family dog to your guest list. Here’s our top tips for tail-wagging adventures and a dog-friendly vacation on Hilton Head Island.
Play on Hilton Head Island’s Dog-Friendly Beaches
Beach loving pups are in for a treat on Hilton Head Island. Hilton Head boasts some of the best dog-friendly beaches in South Carolina with wide open stretches for fetch and frisbee, calm waters for ocean dips, and hard packed sands for digging and beach walks. Burkes Beach is a favorite for dog-lovers with easy access to Chaplin Dog Park or head to Alder Lane Beach for a quieter beach day away from the crowds. Hilton Head Island’s beach rules are perfect for pets! In the high season, dogs are allowed on the beach before 10am and after 5pm, in the off-season Hilton Head is a pooch’s paradise with pets welcome anytime, on leash or under strict voice control.
Cruise the Atlantic Coastline & Barrier Island Waterways
If your pup is adventurous (and a confident swimmer) take your outdoor activities to the next level and explore the coastline and waterways on a dog-friendly charter or cruise on Hilton Head Island. Sail alongside Hilton Head’s resident dolphin pod on Captain Mark’s dolphin cruises, go Lowcountry saltwater fishing on The Runaway, or plan a pet-friendly eco-adventure with Outside Hilton Head. When you vacation on Hilton Head Island, your pooch is always part of the adventures.
Explore Hilton Head’s Dog-Friendly Parks & Trails
If your pup prefers dry land, Hilton Head’s dog-friendly bike paths, nature trails and off-leash dog parks make it easy to get outdoors. Explore the Hilton Head Island bike paths, hike the nature trails at Audubon Newhall Preserve and Sea Pines Forest Preserve, or head to Chaplin Park. Chaplin Park is the most dog-friendly destination on Hilton Head with sports courts, a kids playground, hiking trails, beach access to Burkes Beach, and a fenced-in, double-gated, off-leash dog park for your pooch to romp and roam freely. The chance of encountering local wildlife on Hilton Head Island is high! Please keep your pets leashed, watch out for wildlife on the trails (and in the ponds!), and respect our wildlife habitats leaving no trace behind.
Savor Fresh Seafood, Oceanfront Cocktails and Patio Dining with your Pup
While your furry travel buddy is not allowed inside Hilton Head Island’s cafes and restaurants, nearly every outdoor patio on the island is pet-friendly, and the climate is perfect for year-round patio dining with your pup. With 30+ dog friendly patios on Hilton Head Island (including favorites like The Crazy Crab, The Old Oyster Factory, Fishcamp, and Skull Creek Boathouse), exclusive doggie menus, chews and treats – your pooch will be panting to join you at breakfast, lunch, dinner and oceanfront cocktails on Hilton Head.

That being said, you’ll likely want to do more than just walk or jog with your dog this summer. Thus, we pieced together 10 unique (and fun) activities that are a short walk, bicycle ride, or drive from our eclectic mix of pet-friendly rentals on Hilton Head Island.

Looking to make the most of your next Hilton Head Island vacation with affordable activities for the entire family? We know that money is limited and you want to make the most of it while you’re here with free or low cost adventures. That’s why we’ve put together this list of our favorite budget-friendly activities across the island!
1. Visit the Beach
We know visiting the beach is a no-brainer here on the island, but it’s a popular favorite for a reason! Hilton Head Island is home to 12 miles of white sandy beaches just waiting to be explored. Whether you’d prefer to soak up the sun, splash through the waves, or search for seashells, a beach day is the perfect way to get outside and play with no extra cost!
Local’s Tip: Check out this blog post to find out which beach is right for you!
2. Catch Blue Crabs
Want to get up close and personal with some marine life? Try catching blue crabs at a local public dock! All you have to do is visit a grocery store to buy some string and chicken neck, tie it to a stick, and toss it into the water. Blue crabs love the strong scent of chicken, while other marine animals typically avoid it, so it’s a sure fire way to lure in blue crabs. For the best results, we recommend trying it out at the Cross Island Boat Landing or Old House Creek Dock!
3. Explore the Great Outdoors
As a staff favorite here at Sunset Rentals, the Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge has proven to be one of the best places on the island for bird watching and alligator sightings along the biking and walking trails. The Refuge is a significant part of the Atlantic Flyway, attracting thousands of migratory birds throughout the year, as well as plenty of other local wildlife. It is home to nesting habitats for ibis, egrets, and herons, as well as alligators swimming through the waters, deer frolicking in the wooded areas, and more. Just drive on over and start exploring for free!
Honey Horn is a close second favorite, offering visitors the perfect place to explore the island’s cultural heritage and natural beauty. With plenty of historical buildings, salt marshes, and oyster beds along the way, you’re sure to get in some wildlife spotting at no cost. The Coastal Discovery Museum is also located at Honey Horn, where you can find exhibits, guided tours, events, and experiences full of opportunities to get up close and personal with Hilton Head’s wild inhabitants for just. For admission price and free entry dates, visit the Coastal Discovery Museum’s website.
4. Enjoy Free Shows at Shelter Cove
Throughout summer, Shelter Cove features weekly celebrations for Harbourfest! Each week from Memorial Day through Labor Day, you can enjoy week-long events with live music and entertainment, arts and crafts, kids activities, as well as Tuesday night fireworks! 5. Get Outside and Play
Lowcountry Celebration Park is the newest park on Hilton Head Island, offering 10 acres of adventures near Coligny Beach. The Adventure Playground features an expansive pirate ship, wading pool, and playground for the little ones to explore while learning about the island’s rich history, The Perimeter Walk offers the perfect spot for an evening stroll with the little ones, an open lawn is available for family picnics, and a pavilion is offered for quick meals before hitting the beach. There are also two fitness stations, Wi-Fi, restrooms, and more for your action-packed day of adventures across the park.
Nearby at Coligny Beach Park, you can find the Coligny Fountain! Not only does Coligny offer a boardwalk to the beach, multiple lounging areas, convenient trails, and beachside shops, but also a fun fountain for the little ones to make a splash. The Coligny Fountain is renowned as one of the most iconic Hilton Head tourist spots, making the perfect photo op while the kids are splashing and playing or rinsing off after a long beach day.
6. Journey Through Museums and Exhibits
Another staff favorite, the Port Royal Maritime Center, is a museum located just 30 minutes from the island but is well worth the scenic drive into Beaufort. Experience an engaging and exciting educational experience for all ages! Get up close and personal with reptiles, travel back in time to view historic fossils, take in the natural beauty from the outdoor docks, learn Gullah Geechee history, and enjoy tons of interactive activities throughout the museum. The best part? Admission is free!
7. Watch for Wildlife
Wherever you look across the island, you’re sure to find wildlife! If you’re on the ocean, search for sea turtles coasting through the waves. If you’re on the beach, you might just find sea turtles making their way to the shore. If you’re staying on a lagoon, you’re likely to see alligators basking in the sun. And if you’re enjoying lunch at a waterfront restaurant, dolphins are often seen breaching along the coast.
On Hilton Head Island, alligators are often seen in Jarvis Creek Park basking along the banks of the pond, swimming through the lagoon systems in Palmetto Dunes, Shipyard, and Sea Pines, as well as exploring the golf courses near water. Just be careful and always pay attention to your surroundings – especially if you hit your ball toward water or wooded areas.
No matter the animal you’re watching for, just be sure to follow wildlife safety and preservation rules, so that you and our wild inhabitants can stay safe on the island!
8. Have a Sand Sculpture Contest
Head over to one of the island’s many beaches with your sand buckets and shovels, plan your best sand sculpture design, and get to digging! Need some inspiration? Many visitors build sandcastles and sculptures along the sandy shores of Hilton Head, so take a walk around and get inspired. When you’re done building, snap a photo and let us be the judge! Just tag us on Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok and show us your creations!

10. Spend Quality Time at Home in Your Vacation Rental
There’s no better way to make the most out of your money than spending quality time at home with your family! One of the best perks of staying in a vacation rental is having the space and privacy to accommodate everyone, especially with a full kitchen and dining area. Full gourmet kitchens allow you to make meals right from home, saving money without having to eat out for every meal. You can make a quick trip to one of Hilton Head’s grocery stores (or have them delivered), make a meal with plenty of room for the whole family to gather around to help, and eat around the table for great conversations and delicious meals. Or, if you’re looking to get outside and enjoy the island views, take your meal outside for a picnic by the pool, on the deck, or at a local park!
Another perk of staying in a vacation rental includes spacious living areas with comfortable seating and TVs–perfect for movie nights! Gather around the living room, sit back and relax, then choose a movie to enjoy together. Plus, if you’re wanting something more interactive, you can gather around for a game night!
